Eugene library offers free conversational English sessions for adults
Eugene Public Library runs free drop-in English conversation groups to help adults practice language and connect with local resources and people.

Eugene Public Library is hosting free, drop-in conversational practice sessions for adults learning English at the Downtown Library, offering a steady on-ramp for residents working toward fluency and local integration. Talk Time runs Saturdays from 10 to 11:30 a.m. and Wednesdays from 4 to 5:30 p.m. under the schedule in place Oct. 1–Dec. 10, 2025 and Jan. 7–March 18, 2026, and participants may attend without registration or ongoing commitment.
Volunteers and library staff lead each session with a "theme of the day," educational games and one-on-one tutoring in a casual setting designed to reduce the intimidation that often comes with learning a new language. Beth Schenderlein, who volunteers after feeling like "a fish out of water" when she first arrived in the United States, described the early vulnerability of new learners: "You feel like a child again. It’s humbling." The program also connects learners to leveled books and online language lessons available through the library, creating a continuum from conversation practice to independent study.
Library staff emphasize the social as well as the linguistic benefits. As staffer Phaedra Salcedo put it, "It’s also an opportunity to be surrounded by people from various parts of the world sharing our cultural differences and our similarities as well." The social network created at Talk Time often complements formal classes; some participants are referred by Lane Community College’s ESL programs, linking community college instruction with practical speaking practice in a community space.
For Lane County residents, the sessions lower practical barriers to participation: there is no fee, no sign-up, and flexible attendance. That matters for people juggling work, childcare and schooling while trying to improve English for employment, services and daily life. The Downtown Library setting places language learning in a public, neutral space that can help newcomers navigate local systems and connect to civic life.

The library page for Talk Time was last updated Jan. 8, 2026. Residents interested in practicing English can drop in during posted hours and learn about additional library supports that match skill level.
Our two cents? Treat a session as a low-stakes chance to build confidence - drop in when you can, try one-on-one tutoring, and pick up a leveled book to keep practicing between meetings.
