A report from a concerned resident at a local resort cabin sent Lane County detectives into a digital investigation that ended with the arrest of Eugene resident Michael Stephen Beasley, 63, on April 23. Investigators said they seized numerous electronic devices during a search at a home in the 4500 block of Old Dillard Road in Eugene after the case began with suspected child sexual abuse material found on a television.

The Lane County Sheriff’s Office said the case was handled by the Lane County Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, which focuses on child exploitation offenses. The search warrant was executed with help from a special agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, a Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office detective and electronic detection K9 Trinity, and the Lane County District Attorney’s Office. Beasley was lodged at the Lane County Jail on 10 counts of encouraging child sexual abuse in the first degree, 10 counts in the second degree, and one count of encouraging sexual assault of an animal.

For parents and caregivers, the case is a reminder that ICAC investigations often begin with a single report, then move through phones, televisions, computers and cloud-linked accounts. The FBI says many child-exploitation cases start when an adult builds a relationship online and later uses manipulation, gifts or threats to coerce explicit images or videos, while NCMEC says its CyberTipline is the nation’s centralized reporting system for online exploitation and recorded more than 36.2 million reports in 2023.

Families in Lane County who suspect online exploitation can report it to the Lane County Sheriff’s Office at 541-682-4150, call 911 in an emergency, or make a CyberTipline report to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children at 1-800-843-5678. The FBI also urges open, ongoing conversations about safe online behavior, and warns that images posted online can be copied and shared far beyond the original account. The sheriff’s office said the investigation remains ongoing and no further details are available at this time.
