Jack Crist pleaded guilty to rape and attempted rape in 2023, then simply didn't show up when it was time to face the consequences. Two years later, a Lane County judge sentenced the 48-year-old Florence man to 10 years in prison after detectives tracked him across the country and arrested him in Chico, California.

Crist failed to appear for his scheduled sentencing in 2024, triggering a multi-state manhunt that took detectives through Missouri and Arizona before the trail ended in Northern California. He was caught in Chico last month.

The 10-year prison sentence was handed down Friday by a Lane County judge, closing a case that had stretched across three states and spanned roughly two years of fugitive flight. Crist had entered guilty pleas to both rape and attempted rape charges in 2023, making his failure to appear for sentencing a deliberate choice to abandon a legal process he had already participated in.

Florence, where Crist is identified as a resident, sits on the Oregon Coast at the western edge of Lane County, roughly 60 miles from the Eugene courthouse where Lane County criminal cases are adjudicated. The distance between that courtroom and Chico, California, where Crist was finally located, spans more than 500 miles, a measure of how far he traveled to avoid a sentence he had, through his own guilty plea, already made inevitable.
