First Story, an Oregon based nonprofit focused on expanding affordable homeownership, announced a new opportunity for Springfield households on December 18. The organization is accepting applications for a remodeled Fresh Start home in the Hayden Homes Westwinds community, and will select the first recipient in 2026. The program pairs a zero down, zero percent, 30 year mortgage with required homeownership education through GreenPath to prepare families for long term ownership.

Since launching its partnership with Hayden Homes, First Story has helped 128 families obtain affordable homes, an achievement the nonprofit frames as a vehicle for changing generational outcomes. The Fresh Start initiative in Springfield reflects ongoing collaboration with developers and community partners, including Simplicity by Hayden Homes, which contributes materials, labor, and other resources to ready the house for the next family. Ryan Jennings, president of Simplicity by Hayden Homes, said, “Our philosophy is to Give As You Go, so together we build a strong community and lead fulfilled lives.”

Affordable ownership carries local public health and equity implications. Stable housing reduces stress, decreases overcrowding, and improves access to consistent health care and nutritious food, outcomes that disproportionately benefit lower income households. For Lane County, where affordable units remain scarce, programs that convert newly built or remodeled homes into long term ownership opportunities aim to stem displacement and create wealth that can be passed to children.

Eligible households are asked to complete the Free GreenPath homeownership education as part of the application process. Selected families will take part in a Home Dedication ceremony with family, friends, and community partners, an event that organizers say celebrates community investment and mutual support.

First Story is taking applications now and directs interested families to firststory.org for application details, eligibility criteria, and information about the required homeownership education. The project underscores how public private collaboration can expand housing options while addressing broader social equity and health needs in Springfield and surrounding communities.
