The Lane County Beekeepers Association brought together aspiring apiarists at the Irving Garage on Saturday for a seven-hour immersion in hive management, honeybee biology, and the practical realities of keeping bees in the Pacific Northwest.

Lane County Bee School ran from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 1011 Irvington Drive, drawing on more than 25 years of collective beekeeping experience from Eugene-area instructors. The LCBA framed the event as a direct response to mounting environmental pressures that have made the craft increasingly difficult to sustain.

"It has never been harder in history for beekeepers," said Flora Molyneaux, the LCBA's educational coordinator. Molyneaux, a master herbalist of more than 20 years, developed the curriculum herself and described the workshop as an effort to pass on practical knowledge to the next generation of local keepers.

The full-day format combined classroom workshops with hands-on experience, covering subjects including honeybee biology and the fundamentals of starting and maintaining a beehive. The LCBA designed the program so that participants could leave with enough foundational knowledge to begin their beekeeping journeys with confidence.

Registration was priced at $80 for general attendees, $75 for LCBA members, and $40 for those presenting SNAP benefits, with lunch included at all price tiers. The sliding scale reflected the association's aim to make entry into beekeeping accessible across income levels.
