A passing motorist reported a house fire in the 2000 block of Brewer Avenue in Eugene’s Cal Young neighborhood about 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2026, and Eugene Springfield Fire crews quickly responded, placing the fire under control at 2:51 p.m.

Engine 9 from Valley River was in the area on a non-urgent call when the crew transitioned to the house fire, arriving shortly after dispatch and finding a working fire on the side exterior with smoke coming from the attic. Crews knocked down the exterior fire and moved inside for an interior fire attack and primary search, with Ladder 11 arriving shortly after to assist interior operations.

Firefighters found that the blaze had extended into the living room; crews “quickly knocked down the active fire in the house, pulled the ceiling in the living room, and checked for fire in the attic,” and Truck 1 was sent to the roof to open ventilation holes and check for fire extension from above. The sequence of exterior knockdown, interior attack, ceiling pull and attic check brought all flames under control in roughly 20 minutes.

No human victims were located during the primary search. “No human victims were found, and crews continued to look for two cats that remain unaccounted for,” the fire department stated. The cause of the Jan. 7 Brewer Avenue fire remains under investigation.

The rapid response highlights how nearby units and pre-positioned resources, Engine 9, Ladder 11 and Truck 1, worked together to limit the fire’s spread and potential for injury in a densely settled neighborhood. Photographs of the scene were published by Eugene Springfield Fire and KEZI 9 News, which lists image files labeled ESF house fire1 wide.jpg, ESF house fire2 wide.jpg and ESF house fire3 wide.jpg.

For the Cal Young block where the fire occurred, the immediate human-health outcome was positive in that no injuries were reported, but the incident raises continuing community concerns about displaced residents, missing pets and the emotional toll on neighbors; ESF is handling the investigation and has not released additional details about occupant displacement or property damage estimates. Journalists and neighbors seeking updates should watch for statements from Eugene Springfield Fire as the cause investigation proceeds.
