A man intentionally stepped into traffic on Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway adjacent to PeaceHealth Sacred Heart Medical Center RiverBend and was found dead in the roadway after being struck by a vehicle, Springfield police said. The driver who struck him remained on scene and is cooperating while the Major Accident Investigation Team handles the probe.

Springfield police were notified at about 4:45 a.m. on Jan. 29 after a caller told dispatch she had to swerve to avoid a person in the roadway. Springfield Sgt. Del Castillo said in a police press release that the caller “was able to swerve around the person but were worried the man's act was intentional.” The first officer arrived within two minutes of the call and located the man and a vehicle stopped nearby.

Investigators have said initial evidence suggests the man intentionally placed himself in front of vehicles. Police have not labeled the death beyond the ongoing investigation; Sgt. Del Castillo said the man’s name is being withheld pending a death notification to his family. No criminal charges have been announced and no additional victims were reported.

The driver who struck the man was not the original caller, according to police, and remained at the scene to cooperate with investigators. Details about the striking vehicle, any damage, or whether any traffic cameras or hospital security footage captured the event have not been released. Springfield police and the Major Accident Investigation Team are expected to determine the precise sequence of events and to work with the medical examiner on cause and manner of death.

The location of the incident - the stretch of MLK Jr. Parkway that runs by RiverBend - makes this a matter of local concern. The roadway is a primary access route for ambulances, staff and patients traveling to the hospital campus, and early morning collisions or intentional acts in traffic can complicate emergency response and patient transport. Neighbors and drivers who travel that corridor routinely should be aware that investigators may need to close lanes during evidence collection and that police will review any available video and witness statements.

The case also touches on broader issues of pedestrian safety and mental health in public spaces. Police have described the act as intentional in early reporting, but officials have not publicly declared a manner of death; that determination typically awaits autopsy and investigative findings.

Springfield police say they will release more information as the investigation progresses and after family notification is complete. Springfield Sgt. Del Castillo provided the quoted information in the department’s press release. For follow up or tips, Springfield Police Department is the investigative contact; additional details about the incident and any official findings will be shared by investigators when available.
