Moped rider severely injured in Territorial Highway crash near Lorane
A box truck crossed into the southbound lane on Territorial Highway near Old Lorane Road and struck a moped, sending the rider to an area hospital with severe injuries.

A southbound moped rider was left with severe injuries after a box truck crossed into the oncoming lane on Territorial Highway near Old Lorane Road, a rural stretch Lane County has spent years trying to make safer.
Lane County Sheriff’s deputies and fire personnel responded to the two-vehicle crash at about 8 p.m. on April 28. The collision involved a 2005 Ford F550 box truck and a 2001 Honda moped, and the truck driver remained at the scene.
Early evidence shows the truck was traveling north on Territorial Highway when it crossed into the southbound lane and struck the moped. The rider was taken to an area hospital with severe injuries, and the Lane County Sheriff’s Crash Reconstruction Team took over the investigation.
The crash happened at a point that has long drawn attention from county transportation planners and residents who travel the Territorial Highway corridor between Gillespie Corners and Lorane. Lane County has been working with the community on safety improvements there for years, beginning with technical analysis and public involvement in 2014 and culminating in a Corridor Plan adopted by the Board in 2019.

That plan covers 5.71 miles of Territorial Highway between milepost 32.06 at Gillespie Corners and milepost 37.37 near the town of Lorane. Among the improvements Lane County has described are widening the road to provide 6-foot shoulders and realigning four curves to improve access and sight distance, changes meant to reduce the risk that a brief mistake on a winding rural road turns into a serious injury.
Oregon law requires moped riders to wear helmets, and the Oregon DMV says collisions can happen at any time, even on short rides. On a corridor like this one, where mopeds share the pavement with larger vehicles and limited recovery room, the April 28 crash underscores how quickly a local trip can become a severe injury case.
