Tyler Bellerose has left the hospital and moved into inpatient rehabilitation in Eugene after an April 13 automobile crash left the Oregon State freshman pitcher with a traumatic brain injury, a neck injury and swelling and bleeding near his spine.
The Eugene transfer marks the next stage in a recovery that remains long and uncertain. Earlier reporting said Bellerose also had limited movement in his left arm and shoulder and no movement in his right leg, injuries that point to a rehabilitation process focused first on basic movement, neurological recovery and daily independence before any talk of baseball can come back into view.
Oregon State first said on April 14 that Bellerose was in serious medical condition after the crash. The accident immediately disrupted the Beavers’ schedule as Oregon State and Oregon postponed their planned rivalry game in Hillsboro, set for 6 p.m. that night, and later decided not to reschedule it.
The freshman’s injury has also drawn a wave of support off the field. A third-party GiveSendGo fundraiser organized by Oregon State donor Dominic Cusimano set a $50,000 goal, cleared it within about a day and later climbed past $88,000 to help with medical and travel costs.
For Lane County readers, Bellerose’s move to Eugene means the aftermath of the crash is no longer a distant campus story. It is now unfolding here, in a city where rehabilitation often becomes a daily grind of therapy sessions, small gains and setbacks measured one movement at a time.
His family and supporters have asked for privacy and continued prayers as he begins that work. For now, the question is not when he will pitch again, but how much function he can regain in the months ahead, and how a freshman athlete rebuilds a life after a crash this severe.
