Flames that started in a detached garage in downtown Eugene came close to becoming a much larger business fire, but Eugene-Springfield Fire crews kept the damage contained before it reached Vero Espresso House at 205 E 14th Ave.

Firefighters were called early on May 2 and found the fire burning in a detached garage that Pearl Day Spa was using as an office. Crews put out the flames on the outside of the building and prevented the fire from spreading to the coffee shop next door. No one was hurt, and damage was limited to items inside the converted garage.

The near miss matters because the buildings sit in one of the city’s busiest commercial corridors, where close setbacks and shared activity can turn a small ignition into a block-level problem. Downtown Eugene is described by the city as the social, economic and cultural heart of the community, which means even a modest garage fire can threaten foot traffic, nearby tenants and day-to-day business operations.

The setup also added risk. A detached garage used as office space combines older, residential-style construction with commercial use, a mix that can let fire move faster than owners expect if it is not caught quickly. In this case, the fast arrival of Eugene-Springfield Fire made the difference between a contained loss and a possible multi-business closure.

Vero Espresso House says it has been serving Eugene since 2009, giving it a long-standing place in the downtown business mix. Pearl Day Spa lists its Eugene address at 1375 Pearl St. Both businesses operate in a part of town where a fire can quickly threaten neighboring storefronts, upper-floor tenants and the buildings that support them.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Eugene Springfield Fire says its mission is to protect life, preserve property and the environment through prevention, education, rescue, fire suppression and emergency medical services, and this response fit that mission closely.

The incident also echoed other quick knockdowns by local crews, including a west Eugene commercial structure fire on Feb. 10, 2025, that was extinguished before it spread further. In downtown Eugene, where small businesses depend on every open day, the speed of the response was the difference between inconvenience and much larger loss.
