Traffic stalled at one of Eugene’s most familiar choke points Thursday afternoon after a three-vehicle crash closed northbound Coburg Road at Elysium Avenue during the peak commute.

Eugene Police and Eugene Springfield Fire were dispatched at about 4:30 p.m. on May 7 to the Beltline and Coburg Roads interchange, where an Audi A4, a Toyota Corolla and a Chrysler TNC vehicle collided. Police said the Audi struck a metal crosswalk pole and sign and came to rest off the roadway in the grass.

All three vehicles sustained extensive damage, and airbags deployed, signaling a hard impact at a corridor that handles heavy daily traffic between north Eugene and the rest of the city. The closure of northbound Coburg Road at Elysium Avenue forced drivers to slow, reroute and work around delays as crews cleared the scene.

The location matters because Beltline, Coburg Road and the Elysium area carry commuters, students, workers and drivers moving between Eugene and Springfield. When this interchange backs up, the effect can spill beyond the immediate crash site and into nearby neighborhoods, evening pickups and cross-town travel.

The crash also fits a broader pattern on the Beltline Highway, which has repeatedly drawn emergency response for serious collisions and shutdowns. Recent incidents have closed a key connector to Interstate 5, blocked the eastbound off-ramp to Highway 99 and sent crews to injury and fatal crashes near the River Road exit and along Coburg Road north of Eugene.

Thursday’s wreck did not just stop three vehicles. It hit a stretch of road that Lane County drivers rely on every day, and it again showed how quickly a single crash at Beltline and Coburg can disrupt movement across a large part of Eugene.
