Lane County closed Wendling Road at the Wendling Covered Bridge near Marcola, cutting off the route at milepost 3.5 through Wednesday, July 29. The county marked the shutdown as a complete closure and directed drivers who need to get beyond the bridge area to use BLM Road 16-1-10.

That detour matters most for people who rely on the road as a rural connector in the Mill Creek area: nearby residents, contractors hauling equipment, service crews heading to properties beyond the bridge, and anyone trying to move through the Marcola area without backtracking. With the crossing fully closed, drivers cannot count on getting through at the bridge site and will need to plan for a different approach before leaving home or a jobsite.

The county notice did not state why the road was shut down. What it did make clear is that the closure is complete, not a lane restriction or short delay, which limits access at a point where Wendling Road serves as a local route rather than a major highway. Lane County’s posted alternate route gives travelers a specific bypass to reach points beyond the bridge, but it also means extra distance and extra time for anyone whose normal trip runs through Wendling.

The bridge itself is one of Lane County’s better-known historic crossings. Heritage records say the Wendling Covered Bridge spans Mill Creek near Wendling, Oregon, was erected in 1938, and is 60 feet long. Oregon Department of Transportation’s Historic Highway Bridges of Oregon report identifies it as a timber through truss, or Howe, covered bridge and says it was one of four covered bridges Lane County built in 1938. That report also says the county spent $2,241 to build it.

Lane County’s historic covered-bridges materials place Wendling among the county’s preserved covered bridges, which is one reason a temporary closure there draws attention beyond a routine roadwork notice. For now, the practical message for Marcola-area traffic is straightforward: use the posted detour, do not plan to cross at the bridge, and expect the closure to remain in place through July 29 unless the county changes the notice.
