Trinidad hammer attack leaves victim critically injured, suspect charged with attempted murder
A Trinidad apartment resident survived roughly 30 hammer blows to the head and face; police secured the complex and a suspect has been booked on attempted-murder charges.
Neighbors on an apartment property inside Trinidad say officers secured the scene and told residents the immediate danger had been contained after a brutal assault left one person critically injured. Trinidad Police Department patrol officers and Las Animas County investigators responded and began a criminal and evidentiary sweep of the complex, processing the scene and interviewing witnesses.
The assault occurred April 9, 2026, when Trinidad officers arrived to find a bloody altercation that escalated into a hammer attack, leaving the victim with catastrophic blunt-force trauma to the head and face. Local accounts describe roughly 30 hammer strikes; the victim survived and required urgent stabilization before transfer for higher-level trauma care. Mt. San Rafael Hospital, the city’s 25-bed critical-access facility and Level IV trauma center at 410 Benedicta Ave, provided initial emergency treatment in line with Level IV protocols and arranged transfer to a regional trauma center via air or ground critical-care services when specialized neurosurgical and intensive care resources were needed.
Law-enforcement sources say arrests followed quickly after first responders secured the property. Trinidad Police Department and Las Animas County Sheriff’s Office personnel booked at least one suspect, and a second person was later arrested on attempted-murder-related charges, with county investigators completing processing for potential felony filings. Sheriff Derek Navarette’s office routinely provides investigative and custody support for serious incidents inside the city, and investigators collected physical evidence and witness statements as they prepared referral materials for prosecutors.
Prosecutors in Colorado’s 3rd Judicial District will determine formal charging language and arraignment scheduling. Henry Solano’s office, which handles District prosecutions in the region, will review the investigative file to decide whether to seek enhanced counts or additional charges as evidence and medical records are forwarded to the district attorney’s office.
The assault has heightened safety concerns in a city of roughly 8,100 to 8,300 residents, and in Las Animas County, which has about 14,500 residents; law-enforcement and public-safety officials note that unusually violent incidents can strain local victim-support and trauma-transfer resources in small communities. Agency-level crime dashboards and FBI counts show Trinidad and Las Animas County have registered violent-crime rates above statewide averages in recent years, underscoring why investigators are treating this incident with priority.
Investigators continue to interview witnesses and process evidence while prosecutors prepare next steps; the Trinidad Police Department and Las Animas County officials have advised residents to await official updates on booking records, charging documents, and court dates as the case moves toward formal filings.
