Trinidad plans broad Cinco de Mayo celebration with car show, contests

Trinidad is building its Cinco de Mayo celebration as a town-wide gathering, with the Las Animas County Hispanic Chamber of Commerce sponsoring a May 9 event that will stretch beyond a single stage and into the streets, food stands and activity spaces that draw families, music fans and casual visitors alike.

The lineup now listed for Trinidad includes a car show, salsa contest, horseshoe tournament, beer garden, live bands and more. Visit Trinidad’s calendar also places a Cinco de Mayo item on May 9, 2026, and an event listing identifies the Southern Colorado Coal Miners Memorial as the gathering place at 10 a.m. MDT, giving the celebration a clear downtown footprint in Trinidad.

That broader setup matters in a city where public events do more than fill a calendar. The chamber behind the fiesta says its mission is to foster collaboration, drive sustainable economic development and empower the success of its members throughout Trinidad and Las Animas County. In practice, that means a Cinco de Mayo celebration is not just a cultural date on the calendar, but a day that can send people through downtown businesses and keep the county’s business network visible.

The event also fits Trinidad’s setting in the Corazon de Trinidad National Historic District, where adobe and brick buildings from the late 19th and early 20th centuries give downtown its familiar look. History Colorado says Trinidad became southern Colorado’s financial, retail and cultural hub after its 1876 founding, helped by coal fields and the railroad, while Colorado Preservation, Inc. says the El Corazon de Trinidad Commercial District has seen renewed vitality in recent years. City of Trinidad Historic Main Street says it is working to breathe new life into downtown and commercial districts while honoring their historical significance.

The chamber has been putting on Cinco de Mayo celebrations for years. In 2024, the Trinidad Las Animas Hispanic Chamber of Commerce’s annual event ran from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. in downtown Trinidad and included vendors, a car show, live music, DJs, cornhole, food, horseshoe tournament and shopping. Another 2024 listing from KRTN Enchanted Air Radio described a fairgrounds celebration with Mexican food, adult beverages in the beer garden, a pet parade and costume contest, salsa and chili cook-offs, Illusions Dance Studio, Grupo Azteca and DJ Ceasar.

That history gives this year’s fiesta a familiar backbone, but the calendar listings show a sharper local draw: a daytime community gathering built around competition, music and downtown foot traffic, all under the banner of a chamber that has been rooted in Trinidad since April 27, 1988.
