Trinidad police log shows uptick in arrests, patrols, thefts
The Trinidad Police Department posted a dispatch log for December 16 through December 21 that recorded dozens of calls including multiple warrant arrests, repeated extra patrols at businesses and hotels, and several theft and shoplifting incidents. For residents of Las Animas County this activity highlights both a focused enforcement effort ahead of the holidays and persistent public safety concerns involving transients and property crime.

The Trinidad Police Department’s dispatch log for December 16 through December 21 recorded a busy week of enforcement and service calls across the city. The record lists at least four warrant arrests on December 16 alone, multiple citations issued during traffic stops, and a string of extra patrol assignments concentrated overnight and in commercial areas. Those entries suggest officers devoted significant resources to addressing outstanding warrants and increasing visible patrols at businesses and lodging facilities.
Property crime featured prominently in the blotter. Multiple calls for thefts and a shoplifting case were logged at 2012 Freedom Road. A package theft was specifically reported at 627 Arizona Avenue on December 17. Officers responded to several suspicious vehicle and person reports, and a shots fired complaint near First Street and East turned up no evidence when officers arrived. A report of a gas smell at 409 East North Avenue prompted fire public assist action and notification of the gas department, underscoring public safety work beyond criminal enforcement.
Transient related calls and trespass issues were repeatedly documented. A campsite report on Elm Street received an advisory response while a trespass notice was recorded at 309 Nevada Avenue. Multiple entries labeled transient problem and trespass activity appear throughout the week, reflecting ongoing friction between transient populations and neighborhood residents or businesses.
The log also shows routine welfare checks, alarm responses, and code enforcement contacts distributed across residential streets including East Godding, Beech Street, and Portland. Extra patrols were concentrated at hotels and business complexes such as Quality Inn, Holiday Inn, the Big R complex, and Exit 18 Industrial Park during the early morning hours of December 18. Traffic enforcement produced citations at several locations including the 800 block of Atchison and Chestnut, signaling attention to roadway safety as well.
For local residents the blotter paints a mixed picture. On one hand active warrant enforcement and increased patrols can reduce immediate risks and reassure businesses. On the other hand repeated reports of theft, trespass and transient complaints indicate persistent problems that may require longer term measures such as coordinated outreach, property crime prevention strategies and continuing partnerships between law enforcement, social services and business owners. The dispatch log provides a snapshot of public safety operations during a busy week, and will be one piece of information residents and local leaders can use when discussing community safety priorities going into the new year.
