East Helena High hires former Grizzly Ryan Fetherston as wrestling coach

East Helena High School hired Ryan Fetherston as its new boys wrestling head coach, giving the East Helena Outlaws a coach with Helena ties and a resume that reaches from Helena High to the Montana Grizzlies. The hire was shared publicly July 23, and it puts a local name at the center of a program that will be judged by turnout, development and how quickly East Helena can become more competitive on the mat.

Fetherston brings two kinds of experience that matter in a small wrestling market like Lewis and Clark County. He was a state champion wrestler for Helena High, and he also played football for Montana, giving him a background in both championship wrestling and college athletics. That combination should resonate with families who want a coach who knows the local talent pool and understands what it takes to compete beyond the high school level.

The move also fits into an existing youth system on the East Side. The East Helena Wrestling Club says it was established in 1989 and serves wrestlers from age four through high school, creating a long path for athletes who start young and stay in the sport. The club said wrestling practice began in January 2026, underscoring that the program already reaches far below varsity and can feed the high school roster if participation holds.

Before the season starts, parents and students will be watching the same questions coaches always face: how many wrestlers stay in the room, how well younger athletes develop, and whether East Helena can turn local interest into stronger dual-meet results. With a Helena High alum and former Grizzly now leading the program, East Helena is betting that familiarity, credibility and a championship pedigree can help build a deeper wrestling culture for the Outlaws.
