Helena announces Memorial Day closures, Tuesday trash pickup change

Helena households that normally get Monday garbage service need to hold the cart until Tuesday, May 26, and have it out by 7 a.m. The city’s Memorial Day notice also said administrative offices, Civic Center offices, Helena Municipal Court, Capital Transit and the City of Helena Transfer Station will be closed Monday, May 25.

The closure affects more than routine errands. Helena Municipal Court, part of the state judicial system and presided over by the Honorable Anne Peterson, handles misdemeanor traffic and criminal offenses, animal-control offenses, city ordinances, orders of protection and civil cases within Helena city limits. Anyone with a court matter tied to those cases would need to avoid showing up on the holiday closure date.

The city’s service notice was issued May 22, just ahead of the long weekend, and it lines up with Lewis and Clark County’s own holiday memo listing Memorial Day on Monday, May 25. County solid-waste information also shows the Lewis and Clark County Landfill and the Augusta Transfer Site closed that day, giving residents another reason to finish disposal runs before the holiday.

Not every city-related operation will shut down. Bill Roberts Golf Course and Muni’s Restaurant will remain open regular hours, giving Helena a pair of public-facing services that stay available even as offices, transit and waste facilities pause for the day.

The broader holiday schedule extends beyond Helena city government. Lewis & Clark Library listed all branches closed from May 23 through May 25 for Memorial Day, adding another stop to the list residents should not plan on using over the weekend. For anyone crossing off errands in Helena, the practical message is clear: handle court, transit, office business and transfer-station trips before Monday, and shift Monday trash pickup to Tuesday morning.
