Helena College opened graduation weekend with pinning ceremonies Friday for nursing and cosmetology students, a highly personal moment that marked their shift from classrooms and labs into licensed work across Helena and Lewis and Clark County.

The college said more than 150 students were graduating this spring across 12 programs, with Friday’s ceremonies at Airport Campus and Saturday’s commencement at Donaldson Campus. For families watching from the audience, the pinning carried more immediate meaning than a stage crossing: each graduate chose a pinner, usually a parent, sibling, partner, child or other supporter who had helped carry them through the program.

Dean Sandy Bauman described pinning as an important recognition of the move from student to professional, and that idea showed in the tone of the evening. Students were honored not only for finishing coursework, but for the long hours they spent in class, in clinical settings and on their own time preparing for careers that are already in demand in the community.

That workforce connection is especially clear in nursing. Helena College’s 2025 campus report said the RN NCLEX pass rate was 100% for the year, a strong sign that the program is sending prepared nurses into Montana’s healthcare pipeline. In a county where hospitals, clinics, long-term care facilities and other health employers constantly need trained staff, each new nurse represents more than a diploma. It means another shift can be covered, another patient can be seen and another local job stays filled close to home.

Cosmetology carries its own local impact. The program entered its first year of pinning in 2025, and students this spring were the latest to move from training into careers that serve Helena clients every day. One graduate said the experience was not just about learning, but about starting an actual career and turning the page to the next chapter. Another credited a mother’s support for getting through the emotional highs and lows of a hands-on program.

Students also pointed to instructors and their cohort for getting through difficult stretches, underscoring how much the ceremonies represented perseverance as much as achievement. Helena College’s graduation information says diplomas are mailed two to three months after graduation, while degrees are posted to transcripts three to four weeks after final grades. Before any of that, students must meet with an advisor and complete an application for degree or certification, the final administrative step on the road to commencement and to work that Helena will feel long after the weekend ends.
