Helena’s stages filled with some of Montana’s strongest high school musicians as the state solo and ensemble competitions brought the West site to Lewis and Clark County for a free, two-day showcase.

The Montana High School Association scheduled State Solo and Ensemble West for May 1-2 in Helena, while the East site ran the same days in Billings. With no admission charge, the event gave families, teachers and music fans a rare chance to hear top student performers from across the state in one place, turning Helena into a regional hub for choral, instrumental and vocal talent.

MHSA says music has long played a vital role in the Montana high school experience, and the path to state runs through a demanding spring calendar. Each year, 12 district music festivals lead to the state solo and ensemble festivals, and the association says a Superior district rating serves as the application for solo and ensemble entries. That structure makes the state field especially selective, with only students who excel at district level earning a spot on the Helena stage.

The competitions also fit into a larger year of Montana music. MHSA’s 2026 festival calendar lists the All-State Band, Chorus and Orchestra Festival for Oct. 14-16 at Montana State University in Bozeman, extending the performance pipeline well beyond the spring solo and ensemble season. For students in Lewis and Clark County and across the state, the festivals create a ladder of auditions, ratings and performance opportunities that can shape an entire school year.

The MHSA music committee, chaired by Dusty Molyneaux, oversees the program, and assistant director Amy Bartels is listed on the association’s music home page. Their work helps keep the state’s music calendar moving from district festivals to state competition and then to the all-state ensembles later in the fall.

For Helena, hosting the West competition mattered beyond the concert halls. It brought student musicians, directors and families to town during one of the busiest weeks on the spring arts calendar, reinforcing the city’s role as a gathering place for young performers and the community that supports them.
