Bryce Matthew Sutton, 19, of Basin was booked on felony charges of criminal endangerment and aggravated eluding a peace officer, along with misdemeanor counts of driving while suspended or revoked and operating a vehicle without insurance after a late night pursuit on December 20. Sutton remained in custody following his initial appearance in Lewis and Clark County Justice Court.

An arrest affidavit states a Montana Highway Patrol trooper attempted to stop an Infiniti traveling eastbound on U.S. Highway 12 in Helena just after 10 p.m. The affidavit says Sutton accelerated away, reaching about 110 miles per hour near Crossroads Parkway. The pursuit continued into East Helena where the vehicle was reportedly still traveling near 100 miles per hour, the driver ran a red light and passed other vehicles in an erratic manner. The Infiniti then joined Interstate 15 southbound before losing control and crashing head on into a concrete barrier just south of Clancy. A juvenile girl was in the vehicle during the pursuit.

Court records show Sutton faced multiple traffic related matters earlier this year, including a deferred sentence for criminal endangerment and obstructing a peace officer, and a DUI in June. His license had been revoked during that period. Those prior cases are expected to factor into bail and sentencing considerations as the new charges proceed through the Lewis and Clark County justice system.

For local residents the case underscores two pressing concerns. First, the danger posed by high speed chases to motorists, pedestrians and passengers becomes acute when pursuits occur on arterials and through populated areas. Second, the presence of a juvenile passenger highlights child safety and raises questions about enforcement and supervision in repeat traffic offender cases. Law enforcement agencies routinely weigh public safety against pursuit risks, and this crash south of Clancy will likely prompt review of both the incident and the broader approach to dealing with drivers who continue to operate vehicles after license revocation.

Sutton faces criminal proceedings in Lewis and Clark County. The charges include felonies that carry significant prison exposure if convicted, and local officials say the case will be handled through the normal court process.
