Co-Op Summer Showcase launches free local concert series Friday
A free, all-local concert series opens May 15 at Co-Op Park on Central Avenue, with Baggage Claim first up as Los Alamos adds another Friday-night music draw.

Co-Op Park’s performance area at 1010 Central Avenue will open its inaugural Summer Showcase at 6 p.m. Friday with Baggage Claim, giving Los Alamos a free concert series built entirely around local musicians. The stage sits next to Los Alamos Schools Credit Union, putting the show in the middle of one of the county’s most visible downtown corridors.
The timing matters because Central Avenue is becoming a busier summer venue. The Co-Op Showcase arrives just one week before the county’s own Friday concert series begins at Ashley Pond Park on May 22, and it comes alongside Los Alamos MainStreet and Creative District’s Tuesdays @ the Square schedule, which will activate the Central Park Square lawn next to Boese Bros on seven Tuesday evenings in June and July from 6 to 8 p.m. Taken together, the programs point to a broader effort to make the town’s core public spaces more active on weeknights, with the Co-Op series serving as an early-season draw that could build routine foot traffic before the larger county schedule is fully underway.

Because the showcase is free and local, its success will likely be measured less by ticket sales than by whether residents treat Central Avenue as a regular stop for summer evenings. If families, students and commuters show up early, linger after the music and return for later dates, the series could strengthen the case for Co-Op Park as a recurring community venue rather than a one-off novelty. That would also give nearby businesses more reason to benefit from the movement of people through the area on Fridays.
The park already has some history as a public gathering spot. When Co-Op Park opened, Los Alamos Schools Credit Union CEO Matt Schmidt and Board Chairman Bill Boedeker cut the ribbon, and the event included live music from singer/songwriter Eryn Bent. Organizers also have tied the next phase of the park to larger improvements, including a stage canopy and solar panels, which signals that the concert series is part of a longer-term buildout, not just a single summer booking.
