Local Businesses Team Up for Family Shop Local Sticker Hunt
Samizdat Bookstore & Teahouse led a family friendly Shop Local With Richard Scarry sticker hunt on November 20, inviting families to collect stickers at four downtown businesses and return for prizes. The promotion aimed to drive foot traffic to Close Knit Yarn Co Op, Fuller Lodge Art Center, Petree Garden Center and Florist, and Village Arts, while highlighting Samizdat's holiday hours, book bundles, and in store specials.

Samizdat Bookstore & Teahouse organized a family friendly Shop Local With Richard Scarry event on November 20 that encouraged families to visit multiple downtown merchants during the holiday shopping period. Participants picked up a sticker booklet at Samizdat, visited four participating businesses to collect stickers, and returned the completed booklets for prizes. The participating businesses were Close Knit Yarn Co Op, Fuller Lodge Art Center, Petree Garden Center and Florist, and Village Arts.
The promotion served two purposes for local shoppers and merchants. For families it offered an accessible, child centered reason to spend time downtown. For merchants it created structured cross traffic between shops, increasing the chance that visitors drawn in for the activity would also make purchases. Samizdat additionally promoted its seasonal hours and holiday offerings, including curated book bundles and in store specials intended to capture last minute gift shoppers.
Community minded promotions like this rely on simple economic incentives. By turning window shopping into a coordinated route through multiple storefronts, the sticker hunt extended average visit length and distributed customer traffic across several small businesses rather than concentrating sales at a single location. For Los Alamos County this can translate into a measurable boost in local retail receipts during a critical part of the year for small business revenues.

Beyond immediate sales effects, the event reinforced downtown as a community destination. Engaging families fosters habit formation, increasing the likelihood that visitors will return to independent shops outside of peak holiday periods. Local merchants benefit from increased visibility and word of mouth when activities are family centered and shareable.
As the holiday season continues, downtown merchants will be watching whether community oriented promotions translate into sustained increases in foot traffic and sales. For residents the event offered a low cost way to support local businesses while enjoying family friendly activities that highlight the variety of arts, crafts, and literary offerings available in Los Alamos.
