Los Alamos County Closes Camp May Road Jan. 26-29 for Cleanup
Camp May Road will close Jan. 26-29 for cleanup tied to Jemez Mountain Fire Protection Project work; expect barricades and check Cone Zone for traffic updates.

Camp May Road will be closed and barricaded from Monday, Jan. 26 through Thursday, Jan. 29 as part of a cleanup phase for the Jemez Mountain Fire Protection Project. The closure follows extended construction activity and was timed to avoid interfering with weekend skier access to Pajarito Mountain.
Los Alamos County announced that contractor DUB-L-EE is conducting cleanup activities related to installation of waterlines and conduit for electric and fiber lines up toward Pajarito Mountain. County officials said the project had continued longer than originally expected, prompting a winter pause and the short closure of Camp May Road to complete site cleanup safely.
The closure will affect local traffic patterns on the Camp May Road corridor. The road will be barricaded during the cleanup period, and residents who normally use Camp May Road to reach Pajarito Mountain or nearby neighborhoods should plan alternate routes during work hours. Weekend skier access was specifically considered when scheduling the pause, with county planners aiming to minimize disruption for recreational traffic on peak snow days.
Infrastructure work under the Jemez Mountain Fire Protection Project is intended to strengthen water and utility delivery uphill toward the ski area and adjacent neighborhoods. Installation of waterlines and conduit for electric and fiber lines supports both everyday needs and longer-term wildfire protection goals embedded in the JMFPP. Completing cleanup and implementing a winter pause are part of the project timeline as crews move into a less active season.
For the latest traffic impacts and lane closures, residents are directed to the County’s Cone Zone page. Project details and background information are available at ladpu.com/JMFPP. For questions about the closure or the project, contact Ernesto Gallegos at Los Alamos County.
The short closure is a reminder that infrastructure upgrades for fire protection and utility resilience can produce temporary inconvenience even as they aim to reduce longer-term risk to the community. Expect Camp May Road to reopen after the cleanup window concludes on Jan. 29, and check Cone Zone and ladpu.com/JMFPP for any schedule changes or follow-up work that could affect access in the weeks ahead.
