Los Alamos County Launches Wildfire Preparedness Campaign Ahead of 2026 Fire Season
The Los Alamos Fire Department is holding Wildfire Day on April 4 and quarterly planning meetings as part of a new countywide preparedness push.

The Los Alamos Fire Department and the County Office of Emergency Management have launched a community-wide wildfire prevention and preparedness campaign ahead of the 2026 fire season, anchored by two recurring public programs: quarterly emergency planning meetings and an annual Wildfire Day event scheduled for April 4.
The campaign's core mission is straightforward: teach residents how to keep fires from starting, how to make their homes more resistant to wildfire, and how to evacuate safely if a fire approaches. Both the LAFD and OEM are leading the effort, which targets Los Alamos County as a whole rather than any single neighborhood or district.
Wildfire Day on April 4 serves as the campaign's centerpiece community event, though specific times and a venue have not yet been announced. The quarterly emergency planning meetings are designed to keep preparedness efforts active throughout the year, not just during peak fire conditions.

Residents can sign up for emergency alerts delivered directly to their phones through the Los Alamos County website. Those alerts are intended to provide timely warnings if fire conditions develop in or around the county.
Los Alamos County sits in terrain that has historically faced serious wildfire exposure, making early-season preparation particularly consequential. With spring conditions approaching, LAFD and OEM are pushing residents to act before fire weather arrives rather than after.
