Memorial Day will shut down Los Alamos County’s administrative offices, fixed-route transit and Environmental Services on Monday, May 25, forcing a countywide shuffle of trash pickup, travel plans and recreation schedules as residents head into the holiday weekend.

White Rock and Mesa libraries will stay open from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., giving readers a limited window for library stops. The Los Alamos County Aquatic Center will keep the Leisure Lagoon open from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., while the main pool and therapy pool remain closed for the holiday. The Los Alamos County Ice Rink will be closed, but the Golf Course and Golf Shop will operate from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. The golf course is the county’s 18-hole, par-72 layout, stretching 6,800 yards.

Transit riders will need to plan ahead. There will be no fixed bus routes or Dial-a-Ride service on Memorial Day, although the Bandelier Shuttle will continue to operate within the park. Atomic City Transit normally runs free county service Monday through Friday, but the holiday pause means commuters, visitors and anyone moving between White Rock, Mesa and downtown Los Alamos will need another ride. For police, fire, utility and park-related needs, the county directs residents to dispatch; emergencies should still go to 911.

Trash and recycling service will also move off its normal rhythm. Environmental Services commercial and residential refuse and recycling collection will resume Tuesday, May 26. Residents whose regular pickup day falls on the observed holiday should set materials out Wednesday, May 27 instead. Utilities will be closed for regular business, but crews will remain on call 24/7 for emergencies at 505-662-8222, and essential police, fire and utility stand-by personnel will continue service throughout the holiday.

The county’s Memorial Day schedule fits its standard observed-holiday policy, which closes administrative offices when the holiday falls on a Monday and keeps essential services running. It also comes as recreation facilities are being managed around a busy spring calendar. Piñon Park Pool in White Rock is set to open Saturday, May 23, after the county secured a lease in February to operate it from May through October. The pool will be open Memorial Day from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., and the county has said the Leisure Lagoon will be closed on Saturdays and federally observed holidays to fully staff Piñon Park Pool. At the Aquatic Center, an Olympic pool resurfacing project runs from February through October 2026, adding another layer to the holiday-hour adjustments.
