Los Alamos Middle School athletic director named Northeast Region honoree

Doug Weiss, Los Alamos Middle School’s athletic director, has been named the 2026 Northeast Region Athletic Director of the Year. The honor, announced Aug. 3, puts regional recognition on a role that helps steer youth sports in Los Alamos County.

Weiss’s award builds on a steady rise inside Los Alamos Public Schools athletics. In August 2024, the district’s athletic department identified him as its new assistant athletic director alongside athletic director Guy Meyer and head athletic trainer Mick Matuszak. In August 2025, he was again listed as assistant athletic director, working with athletic assistant Sarah Morgan, Meyer and athletic trainer Arturo Rodriguez-Gonzales.

His credentials also received outside recognition earlier this year. On Jan. 25, the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association recognized Weiss as a Certified Athletic Administrator, a professional designation that reflects the kind of day-to-day work that keeps school sports moving: coordinating coaches, facilities, transportation, compliance, student eligibility, safety and communication with families.

For Los Alamos families, that work matters most when the schedule gets complicated. Middle school sports are often the first place students learn the routines of practice, travel, team expectations and balancing athletics with schoolwork. A well-run athletic office can make that experience safer and more organized, especially in a district where the athletics system spans both Los Alamos Middle School and Los Alamos High School.

Los Alamos Public Schools athletics says season passes include entry to all middle school games as well as high school regular-season games, a small detail that shows how closely the district’s sports programs are connected. The district also lists Weiss on its athletics contact information with a Los Alamos, NM 87544 school address and the email d.weiss@laschools.net, placing him squarely in the public-facing side of that system.

The regional honor follows similar recognition for Los Alamos athletics leadership. Meyer was named Northeast Region Athletic Director of the Year for the 2024-2025 school year on Aug. 15, 2025, underscoring that the county’s school sports programs have become visible beyond the local campus. Weiss’s award extends that attention to the middle school level, where hundreds of students and families experience the daily work of school athletics first.
