The Los Alamos Mountaineers have opened registration for their 2026 rock climbing school, partnering again with Mountain Skills Rock Climbing Adventures of Taos to run four consecutive Saturday sessions at Tres Piedras and other Northern New Mexico climbing areas throughout May.

The $650 course runs May 2, May 9, May 16, and May 30, with each outdoor session lasting a full six hours. Scholarship aid may be possible in cases of need, according to the announcement published by William Priedhorsky on behalf of the organization.

Registration is not complete until three conditions are met: participants sign up online through the Mountaineers' climbing school page, payment is received by the organization, and participants hold a current LAM membership, signing up for one if they do not already have one. Payment must be made by check payable to "Los Alamos Mountaineers" and mailed to LAM c/o Claire Schappert at 115 Grand Canyon, White Rock, NM 87547. Refunds are issued only if a suitable replacement can be found to fill the vacated slot.

The school requires a minimum of seven participants to run and caps enrollment at 25. Helmets, harnesses, and climbing shoes will be provided based on sizing information submitted in the registration form. Participants are responsible for bringing their own lunches and water to each outdoor session, and will sign a Los Alamos Mountaineers waiver at the first class along with any additional waivers required by Mountain Skills.

The published syllabus covers core technical skills across the first three sessions: May 2 introduces climbing movement and belaying; May 9 builds on belaying technique with simple anchors; May 16 moves into traditional gear, removing protection, and seconding. The May 30 syllabus was not specified in the announcement. Participants may also choose to tip the Mountain Skills instructors at the course's conclusion.

The 2026 school follows what the Mountaineers described as a successful revival of the program in 2025, marking the second consecutive year the organization has offered structured instruction in partnership with the Taos-based climbing guide service.
