Los Alamos tennis turned the Taos district tournament into a showcase of depth, placing six boys on the podium and sending three girls into the semifinals as the program heads into the state meet with uncommon confidence.

The boys side was especially strong. Eighth grader Luke Gibson won the district singles title, defeating Holden Harvey-Romero of Santa Fe Prep in the final. In an all-Los Alamos match for third place, freshman Levi Gibson topped Cullen McLean to add another medal for the Toppers. In doubles, seniors Mike Witkowski and junior Aditya Viswanathan finished second after falling just short in the final against Santa Fe Prep, while sophomores Zach Gibson and Logan Swickley beat St. Michael’s to claim third place.

That kind of spread across singles and doubles mattered because it followed a district team title that had already signaled a breakthrough for Los Alamos High School tennis. The boys beat St. Michael’s 6-0 in the semifinals and Santa Fe Prep 5-0 in the championship match, capturing the program’s first district crown since 2018. For a team built across multiple grade levels, the results in Taos suggested the district title was no fluke.

The girls also showed steady progress. Junior Caris Hatler reached the third-place match in singles before dropping a tight three-set contest to an opponent from Espanola Valley High School. In doubles, Lucia Rudin and Julia Robel pushed Santa Fe Prep to another three-set battle before falling in their third-place match. Earlier in the district bracket, the girls beat St. Michael’s 5-1 in the quarterfinals and then lost 5-2 to Santa Fe Prep in the semifinals before finishing third with a 5-4 win over Robertson.

That third-place finish capped a clear upward climb for the girls program, which has moved from fifth to fourth to third in district play over the past three seasons. Los Alamos also is losing only one senior from its top eight, a detail that points to continuity as the state tournament approaches.

The New Mexico Activities Association scheduled the 2026 state tennis championships for May 6 through May 9 in Albuquerque, with individual championships on May 6 and 7 and team championships on May 8 and 9. With district individuals run in the final stretch before state and the boys already carrying a district team title, Los Alamos arrives in Albuquerque with both results and expectations rising at the same time.
