NNSA Schedules Public Meeting on Tritium Emissions in Los Alamos
The National Nuclear Security Administration announced on November 29 that it will hold a public meeting in Los Alamos on December 9 to present data from depressurization of four flanged tritium waste containers at Los Alamos National Laboratory. The meeting provides an opportunity for residents to review the FTWC Radioactive Air Emissions Summary Volume 1 and to ask questions about emissions and monitoring results.

The National Nuclear Security Administration announced on November 29 that it will host a public meeting in Los Alamos on December 9 to discuss data from depressurization of four flanged tritium waste containers at Los Alamos National Laboratory. The meeting is scheduled to run from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. at the Sala Event Center located at 2551 Central Avenue and will include a Zoom option for remote participants. The announcement notes that the fourth and final container was shipped offsite for permanent storage on November 14.
The agency posted the FTWC Radioactive Air Emissions Summary Volume 1, which presents monitoring data and emissions information related to the depressurization work. The public notice invites residents to review the posted summary and to attend the December 9 session to ask questions about the emissions and the monitoring data. The availability of the report and the meeting are part of an effort to provide transparency about the handling and disposition of the flanged tritium waste containers.

For Los Alamos County residents the meeting addresses both immediate and longer term concerns about onsite handling and storage of tritium bearing materials. The shipping of the fourth container to permanent storage alters the onsite inventory of these containers, and the emissions summary provides the first consolidated set of monitoring data that local officials, advocates, and residents can examine. Public review of that data will inform community understanding of what was emitted during depressurization and how monitoring captured those results.
The NNSA and Los Alamos National Laboratory will present the findings and make staff available to answer questions about the monitoring approach and results. Community members who wish to follow the technical data can consult the posted FTWC Radioactive Air Emissions Summary Volume 1 ahead of the meeting and may participate in person or by Zoom. The meeting represents a focused opportunity for civic engagement on waste management practices and for local stakeholders to seek clarity about environmental monitoring and institutional oversight.
