More than 10 tons of rock and dirt now frame Ponderosa Montessori School’s entrance in White Rock after Alex Sandborgh of Scout Troop 122 turned his Eagle project into a visible campus upgrade that students, staff and families will use every day.

Sandborgh chose to re-landscape the entrance section of the school at 302 Rover Blvd., and the work went far beyond a quick cleanup. He planned and organized the project himself, coordinated 22 other people who contributed labor, sifted the dirt and then returned the rocks to the space once the area was prepared. In all, the project accounted for 126 volunteer hours.

The result matters because the entrance is part of the first space children and parents see when they arrive at Ponderosa Montessori, a school that says it is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit providing quality education since 1967. The school lists its White Rock address as 304 Rover Blvd., and says it welcomes all people and admits students regardless of race, color, religion, gender, family structure, disability or national and ethnic origin.

Support from scout leaders, friends, Los Alamos Home Improvement, also known as ACE Hardware, and Ponderosa Montessori School helped make the project possible through discounts or contributions toward materials. That backing helped turn Sandborgh’s Eagle requirement into a permanent campus improvement rather than a one-day service event.

The project also fits into a longer Troop 122 tradition in Los Alamos County. The troop was founded in 1953, meets Thursday evenings at the First United Methodist Church in Los Alamos and has produced 160 Eagle Scouts. Other Troop 122 Eagle projects have left their own marks on the community, including Michael Aslam’s raised planter beds for the Betty Ehart Senior Center and Coen Noeninckx’s flag retirement ceremony at American Legion Post 90.

For White Rock families, the finished entrance is the kind of improvement that changes daily routines in a small but lasting way. For Troop 122, it is another example of how an Eagle project can leave a practical, public-facing benefit long after the last shovel of dirt is moved.
