Toppers win fifth straight district title, advance to state
Sierra Gonzales fueled Los Alamos’ district-clinching run, and the Toppers carried an 11-game streak and a 17-5 record into the May 6-16 state bracket.

Sierra Gonzales homered, tripled and scored four times in one of Los Alamos’ two decisive wins over Moriarty, the kind of production that has kept the Toppers on top of district softball for five straight seasons. Los Alamos secured its fifth consecutive district title and moved on to the state tournament with a roster that showed both power and depth at the right time.
The Toppers beat Moriarty 18-8 and 19-1 on May 1, then entered the state bracket listed by the New Mexico Activities Association. The state championship window runs May 6-16, giving Los Alamos almost no time to savor another district crown before shifting into postseason play. The team was 17-5 and riding an 11-game winning streak when it reached that stretch, a record that reflects how steadily the program has handled the pressure of another championship run.
Sierra Gonzales was not the only name making a postseason statement. Kohynn Young hit her first home run of the season in the 19-1 win, and Jamie Cisneros added a home run, three RBI and a stolen base in the May 1 sweep. Those performances came from a roster that also includes Nakota Reed, Adia Fortin, Aaliyah Chavez, Andrea Dominguez, Abagail DeHerrera, Ezri Roybal and K’Lee Warwick, a group that has helped Los Alamos keep replacing graduating classes without losing its edge.
That continuity is what makes the district streak matter beyond the trophy case. Five straight titles do not happen by accident in a small county where every season brings new lineups, new pressure and opponents that are built around trying to knock off the standard-bearer. Los Alamos has answered that challenge by staying balanced enough to win in different ways, whether through Gonzales’ extra-base power or the kind of run support that made the Moriarty games blowouts.

The state tournament now becomes the real test of how far that formula can travel. The Toppers are already in the 2026 championship field, and with a district title in hand, they go to Albuquerque with proven experience and a roster that has already shown it can build momentum late. That gives Los Alamos a real chance to turn district dominance into a deeper postseason run at state.
The program has also remained visible beyond the standings. Los Alamos High School softball took part in an inaugural Play for the Cure game at Hope Field in White Rock on April 11, another sign that the team’s reach extends well past one championship chase.
