Twelve electric vehicle charging stations in front of the Los Alamos County Municipal Building are now fully operational following a two-month installation project completed Dec. 30, 2025. Los Alamos County activated a cluster of 12 new electric vehicle charging stations in front of the Municipal Building after a two-month installation that finished Dec. 30, 2025. The stations are powered by six Level 2 dual-port networked chargers and are available for public use, though drivers must have or set up a ChargePoint account at chargepoint.com to operate them.

The County’s Department of Public Utilities set a fee of $0.23 per kilowatt-hour for public charging, a rate intended to help cover ongoing operational expenses for the new infrastructure. With the new networked chargers coming online, the county began removing the existing free EV charging stations starting Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2025. In preparation for removal, the parking spaces closest to the old free chargers were barricaded from Jan. 1 through Friday, Jan. 12.

County officials framed the project as part of a broader commitment to sustainability, energy efficiency, and greenhouse gas emission reduction. The installation was a collaboration between the County Sustainability Office, Public Works, and the Department of Public Utilities, and the construction work was completed by R&M Construction, LLC.

For local drivers the changes have immediate practical effects. The new chargers increase capacity in a prominent downtown location and use modern networked hardware, which may offer improved reliability and payment flexibility compared with the older free stations. At the same time the introduction of a usage fee ends the era of complimentary charging at those sites, a change that could alter charging habits for residents and visitors who previously relied on free access.

Parking patterns near the Municipal Building will be temporarily affected while barricades remain in place through Jan. 12. Motorists planning to use the new chargers should ensure they have a ChargePoint account before arrival and be prepared to pay by the kilowatt-hour. The county says the fee revenue will offset the cost of operating and maintaining the charging infrastructure.

Questions about the chargers, account setup, or the removal of the old stations can be directed to the Department of Public Utilities Customer Care Center at 505.662.8333 or CustomerCare@losalamosnm.gov. Additional details are available on the County website project page.
