UNM-Los Alamos board to attend commencement ceremony Friday

A quorum of UNM-Los Alamos Advisory Board members will be in Duane Smith Auditorium Friday night, but they will not vote on a single item. The 6 p.m. commencement is a student milestone, and the board’s no-business notice matters because it draws a clear line between public celebration and public governance.
That distinction matters in Los Alamos because the advisory board is not a ceremonial group. A Jan. 12 board packet showed the board formally called to order, confirmed a quorum and handled official business, with Vice Chair David Hampton, John Pawlak, Conner Tharp, Andrew Fischer Wright and Kristin Henderson present. When a public body like that gathers in quorum, residents have reason to pay attention to where governance ends and appearance begins.
UNM-LA says its role in the county is to provide an affordable, comprehensive branch community college with transfer foundations, career programs and lifelong learning opportunities. For students finishing close to home, Friday’s ceremony will mark more than a walk across a stage. It will mark the end of a local path into a degree, a transfer program or work in a community that depends on technical training and higher education.
The timing also places UNM-LA’s graduation in the middle of a busy academic stretch. The branch campus student-services newsletter listed May 15 as “Commencement!” and set final exams for May 11-16. Across the broader system, the University of New Mexico scheduled its spring 2026 commencement for Friday and Saturday, May 15-16, at The Pit in Albuquerque.
Last year’s 44th annual Graduation Convocation at Duane Smith Auditorium showed the scale of the event at the Los Alamos campus. UNM-LA said 68 students earned certificates and degrees in 2025, and more than 20 attended the ceremony. That is a small class by university standards, but in a county shaped by education, research and a specialized workforce, it is a meaningful measure of how many students are moving on without leaving town.
The board’s presence Friday will not change the ceremony’s purpose, and it will not open the door to official action. It will, however, put the campus’s governing body in the same room as the students whose futures it helps shape, underscoring why UNM-LA remains a visible part of county life at 4000 University Drive in Los Alamos.
