Vitalant Seeks Blood Donors at Two Upcoming Los Alamos County Events
Type O blood is running critically low regionally, and Vitalant needs Los Alamos donors at two local sites this week — one donation takes under an hour.

Every two seconds, somewhere in the United States, a patient depends on donated blood to survive. That pace does not slow in spring, and Vitalant is counting on Los Alamos County residents to help keep pace with it at two local events scheduled this coming week.
The nonprofit blood center, which supplies hospitals and trauma centers across Northern New Mexico and beyond, has flagged type O as its most urgent need. Type O is the universal donor type deployed when clinicians have no time to test a patient's blood type, making it the first unit pulled in trauma bays, emergency surgeries, and mass-casualty responses. When O inventory dips, hospitals face harder choices about how to allocate every unit on hand.
Spring compounds the pressure. Holiday travel, school schedules, and shifting donor-center staffing patterns converge to reduce turnout precisely when hospital admissions from outdoor accidents and seasonal surgeries rise. For a region like Northern New Mexico, where Los Alamos County donors help supply care networks well beyond the Hill, a quiet week at the bloodmobile translates directly into tighter margins at the hospital level.
One confirmed site is the Vitalant bloodmobile parked at the Municipal Building parking lot at 1000 Central Ave. in Los Alamos, open 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Appointments can be booked in advance at vitalant.org, and walk-ins are also welcome. Donors should bring a valid ID and be prepared to answer a brief health history questionnaire covering recent travel, medications, and medical conditions.

April is National Volunteer Month, and Vitalant is marking it with an incentive: anyone who donates between April 6 and April 30 is automatically entered to win one of two $10,000 prepaid gift cards in the Groceries for a Year Giveaway. First-time donors have an additional reason to show up this month: scheduling an appointment using the promo code DONATE25-2026-V at a Vitalant donation center qualifies a new donor for a $25 gift card through the Rewards program.
The donation process typically takes under an hour from check-in to completion. Vitalant's app, available on major platforms, allows donors to manage appointments, track their donation history, and redeem Rewards points. Full eligibility guidance, including details on recent illness, piercing or tattoo timelines, and international travel, is available at vitalant.org.
