Veterans in McKinley County will not have to make the drive to Albuquerque to get help with VA claims next week. The New Mexico Department of Veterans’ Services will bring a free outreach event to Gallup on May 13, offering one-on-one help to file claims, apply for benefits and talk directly with state agency leadership.

The event is open to veterans, their families and other community members across western New Mexico, not just Gallup residents. Cabinet Secretary Jamison Herrera is part of the outreach effort, giving local families a chance to raise questions with state officials face to face instead of sorting through paperwork alone.

That matters because the benefits at stake can affect a household’s finances and health support. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs says benefits can include disability compensation, education benefits, life insurance, pensions and home loans. For rural families, a missed claim or an incomplete file can mean leaving money and support on the table.

The department says its Mobile Outreach Vehicle and related outreach efforts are designed to bring claims assistance, benefits counseling, outreach and education directly to veterans where they live and gather, especially in rural communities. NMDVS newsletter materials say the outreach team is staffed by accredited Veteran Service Officers, which means attendees can get help from people trained to work on claims and benefits applications.

Veterans should bring a DD-214 or equivalent, VA award letters, proof of New Mexico residency and, if applicable, marriage and death certificates. Those records can speed up the process when applying for federal or state benefits, and they can help staff determine what support a veteran or surviving family member may qualify for.

The VA Office of Rural Health says its mission is to improve care and services for rural veterans, a focus that fits western New Mexico, where distance can be a real barrier. VA regional-benefit materials point New Mexico veterans to the Albuquerque VA Regional Benefit Office for help, but the Gallup event is designed to put that assistance closer to home.

McKinley County already hosts large regional gatherings at places like Red Rock Park, whose convention center can hold rooms for 50 to 500 people. That kind of local capacity helps explain why Gallup can serve as a practical stop for veterans from across the region who need claims help without the long trip.
