Water service was scheduled to go off for eight hours in the 1700 block of Kiva Drive and at 223 Boulder Drive as the City of Gallup Water Department replaced a meter can and shut the water off for safe work.

The outage was set for 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. April 15, and the city warned that surrounding areas could see low water pressure while crews handled the repair. The work was described as a maintenance step, not an emergency, but it still meant a full-day interruption for the directly affected blocks in Gallup.

For households, that meant planning ahead for drinking water, cooking, bathing and laundry before the shutoff started. Businesses in the area also had to account for the loss of water service during the work window, especially any operation that depends on sinks, cleaning or restroom access.

The city’s notice said the Water Department was replacing a meter can and needed to shut off water to do the job safely. That kind of small, local repair can prevent a larger failure later, especially in a city where water service is closely watched and even limited interruptions can affect daily routines.

Gallup’s utility system serves roughly 11,000 accounts in the greater Gallup area and supplies water, electric, wastewater and solid waste services. The city says it produces more than 3 million gallons of drinking water each day and treats 2.4 million gallons of wastewater, which shows how quickly a localized outage can ripple through a large municipal system.

The April 15 work followed another scheduled water outage posted by the city for April 7, when crews said they were investigating a possible main leak on the 200 to 206 block of Coyote Canyon Drive and 3300 to 3321 Churchrock Street. That back-to-back schedule suggests Gallup’s Water Department has been working through multiple localized issues this month rather than waiting for a larger breakdown.

Residents who need to report a utility disruption can contact Utility Dispatch at (505) 863-1200 during business hours. After hours, the city lists 1-833-863-1212 for emergency utility contact.
