Gallup warns of water outage for Highway 491, Yatahey area

Gallup shut off water service for the Highway 491-Yatahey area so crews could repair a water main break safely, warning that nearby customers could also see low water pressure while work continued.

The City of Gallup’s alert center posted the first emergency notice at 3:45 p.m. on June 29, then issued a second notice on June 30 listing the outage window from 6 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The shutdown affected customers along the Highway 491-Yatahey corridor, one of the city’s most traveled service areas where homes and small businesses depend on steady water for daily routines.

The Water Department said the line had to be shut off so crews could work safely on the break. That meant residents and businesses in the affected area had to plan ahead for the interruption, including storing water before service went down and preparing for the possibility of reduced pressure beyond the main outage zone.

Gallup says its utility system serves roughly 11,000 accounts in the greater Gallup area, so even a localized outage can reach a large slice of the city’s customers. The department’s customer-care page lists Utility Dispatch at (505) 863-1200 during business hours, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Central NM Dispatch at 1 (833) 863-1212 nights, weekends and holidays.

The Highway 491-Yatahey shutdown came amid a run of other water-related notices in Gallup. A separate alert from June 18 through June 26 warned that the south side of Gallup could experience discolored water and low pressure during other work, and a June 4 emergency outage notice showed the city had already dealt with another service interruption earlier in the month.

Taken together, the notices point to a June stretch of repeated utility disruptions across Gallup and McKinley County. For families and businesses along Highway 491 and in Yatahey, the immediate concern was simple: no water at the tap for much of the day, with crews working through the repair before service could return.
