Gallup shut off water for several stretches of Linda Drive, Monterey Drive and Red Rock Drive on Wednesday, May 13, giving dozens of homes and nearby blocks a full workday of disrupted cooking, cleaning and bathroom use while crews replaced a valve.

The outage covered 1715 through 1601 Linda Drive, 1600 through 1675 Monterey Drive and 1506 through 1400 Red Rock Drive. The city said surrounding areas also could see low water pressure during the 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. repair window, which meant the impact could reach beyond the named addresses.

In its emergency notice, the City of Gallup Water Department said it had to shut off the water “in order to do their work safely.” That left residents with a simple but urgent task before crews started: store water ahead of time and plan around the interruption for meals, dishwashing, laundry, childcare, pets and any business operations tied to the tap.

The valve replacement came in a city utility system that serves roughly 11,000 accounts in the greater Gallup area, so even a localized shutdown carried a broad warning for the neighborhood and the surrounding blocks. For households without much water stored away, a same-day outage can quickly turn into a public-safety and daily-living problem, especially if low pressure lingers after the main shutoff ends.

Residents with utility trouble were told to contact Utility Dispatch at (505) 863-1200 during weekday business hours. For nights, weekends and holidays, the city listed Central New Mexico Emergency Contact at (833) 863-1212.

The May 13 work also followed another emergency water outage posted for May 7, when the city said it was repairing a water leak, and it came after a February public notice that the Gallup Water System had failed to correct significant deficiencies within the required time frame. Together, the notices point to a water network that has needed repeated attention, making routine valve work a reminder of how quickly maintenance in Gallup can become a neighborhood-level disruption.
