Lady Bengals Surge Past Chargers in District Semifinal, Eye State Playoffs
Gallup's Lady Bengals overturned a halftime deficit with a second-half defensive surge to beat the Lady Chargers and reach the District 1-4A finals.

Gallup High School's Lady Bengals turned a halftime deficit into a commanding second-half performance to beat the Lady Chargers in the District 1-4A tournament semifinal Friday, setting up a district championship showdown with a state playoff berth on the line.
Coach Todd McBroom's adjustments at the break proved decisive. The Lady Bengals came out of the locker room with a sharper defensive stance and tighter ball control, converting that discipline into a scoring run that swung momentum their way. The Lady Chargers never recovered. Free-throw shooting in the fourth quarter finished the job, with Bengal players converting at the line to protect the lead and close out the win.
Individual contributors carried Gallup at every phase of the night. Perimeter players delivered scoring outbursts that built the cushion, Bengal rebounders controlled the glass in critical stretches, and clutch free throws in the final minutes provided the margin of comfort that sealed the result.
As the defending Class 4A state champions, Gallup enters every tournament game with a target on its back. Friday's semifinal showed McBroom's program can still make halftime corrections and finish games when the bracket demands it.

District 1-4A tournament results directly influence state playoff seeding under New Mexico's postseason structure, making every round consequential beyond the scoreboard. A district title would give the Lady Bengals a favorable path into the state bracket, where Gallup is already a known commodity after claiming the 4A crown in 2025.
McKinley County supporters have long packed gyms for district postseason play, and Friday was no exception, with students, parents, and community members turning out to back the green and gold.
The Lady Bengals advance to the district championship, where another win would lock in state playoff positioning and give Gallup a chance to defend its title on the state's biggest stage.
