Families, teachers and district employees lost one of the Menominee Indian School District’s regular public decision nights when the board canceled its April 21 meeting, pushing the next regular session to May 5 at 5 p.m. in High School Innovation Room B.

The cancellation matters because the school board is where budgeting, staffing, policy and student-service questions move from discussion to action. In a district that serves students in Keshena, Neopit and surrounding Menominee Tribal community communities, a missed meeting can delay reports, updates and public comment that would otherwise land in front of the board during the final stretch of the school year.

The district did not lay out a reason in the notice, but the practical effect was clear: anything set for April 21 had to wait. For parents watching end-of-year decisions, the next chance to see board business advance now comes on May 5, just a month before the district’s 2025-2026 school calendar says the last day of school for students is June 5.

That timing gives the May 5 meeting added weight. Menominee Indian School District had 991 students in the 2024 school year, and Menominee Indian High School enrolled 364 students in 2024-2025, so even a one-meeting delay can ripple through classroom planning, transportation, services and staffing across a sizable school community in Menominee County.

The board’s leadership includes President David “Jonesy” Miller, Vice President Terry Waupekenay, Clerk Regina Washinawatok, Treasurer Nanette Corn, and members Lloyd Frieson, Carrie Waukau-Grignon and Karen Washinawatok. Marcus Denny is listed as superintendent. Parents who were expecting to hear from that leadership team on April 21 now have to wait until May 5 for the next regular board meeting and for any decisions that come with it.

The cancellation also comes after a March 24 board meeting that included a superintendent search update and approval of the district’s fiscal year budget calendar, both reminders that the board’s agenda has already been carrying major governance work. With the school year ending June 5, the May 5 meeting becomes the next key checkpoint for district operations, planning and any delayed business the board needs to clear before summer.
