Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office gets $5.25 million for major events security

Miami-Dade County says the Sheriff’s Office secured $5.25 million in federal funding to strengthen security operations for major global events scheduled for 2026, with the money tied to the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the G-20 summit. For residents, the practical question is how that spending will change security at large gatherings across Miami-Dade County, and what new measures the sheriff’s office will actually deploy.

Congressman Mario Díaz-Balart’s office said he delivered a combined $5,250,000 to the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office, and a media advisory from his office scheduled the check presentation for Monday, April 6 at 10:00 a.m. in Doral. The same office said the funding was secured for upcoming major events in South Florida, naming both the World Cup and the G-20 summit. Díaz-Balart’s office also said he has secured more than $11 million for law enforcement in Collier and Miami-Dade to support those events.

Miami-Dade has not broken out a line-item list for the $5.25 million, but the stated purpose is clear: to help the Sheriff’s Office monitor large venues, coordinate with event organizers and place personnel where crowds are heaviest. In practice, that kind of money can shape how visible officers are at major gatherings, how quickly dispatchers and command posts communicate, and how well the county can respond to traffic snarls, emergency calls and other risks that come with packed international events.

The scale of the county’s own law-enforcement spending shows why federal dollars matter. Miami-Dade County’s budget presentation lists the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office FY 2025-26 law-enforcement budget at $754,733,295. County materials also describe the sheriff’s office as the core public safety agency serving Miami-Dade County, and the county maintains a Homeland Security Bureau inside the office for large-scale coordination.

That structure is already being used. County news releases show MDSO conducted proactive operations in support of the 2026 FIFA Club World Cup, a sign that South Florida’s event calendar is being treated as a long-running security project, not a one-off assignment. The larger test for Miami-Dade is whether the added federal money makes major events feel safer without creating harder access, heavier traffic disruption or a more intrusive law-enforcement footprint for people moving through the county’s biggest gatherings.
