While many kids spend Sunday mornings glued to screens, the Florida Keys Fishing Guides Association pointed them toward the water instead. The association's fifth annual Kids Fishing Expo drew young anglers to the Great Lawn at Founders Park in Islamorada on Sunday, March 15, running from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at no cost to participants.

The free, hands-on event was open to children 16 and younger, with children under 13 required to be accompanied by an adult. Organized and staffed entirely by local professional guides who fish the Keys year-round, the expo offered instruction in spin- and fly-casting, fly tying, knot tying, and the rhythm and technique of throwing a cast net. Local captains stepped away from their skiffs to lead every instructional station themselves.

Competitions in spin- and fly-casting gave kids a chance to test what they learned, with trophies awarded across four age groups. After the awards, a raffle was held for all participants; each child received a raffle ticket upon entry. Families who registered early at fkfga.com were also eligible for early-entry prizes. Lunch, water, and sodas were provided to all participants at no charge.

Local law enforcement agencies joined guides on the Great Lawn to talk with kids about protecting the waters they were learning to fish, adding an environmental stewardship component alongside the casting and knot-tying lessons.

Those interested in supporting future expos can make checks payable to the Florida Keys Fishing Guides Association and mail them to P.O. Box 936, Islamorada, FL 33036. To donate items, volunteer, or get more information, contact Capt. Steve Thomas at 305-393-0943.
