Key West answered Satellite’s early punch with the kind of inning that can save a postseason, scoring four times in the bottom of the second after the Scorpions struck first and added a solo home run. The Conchs steadied from there and won the regional quarterfinal, keeping their playoff run alive and pushing their record to 23-5.

The bounce-back came from all over the lineup. Nelson Ong led the way with two hits and lifted his season total to 35, while Roman Garcia drove in two runs. Kade Maltz and Kristian Masters each added a hit and an RBI, and Jackie Niles chipped in another hit. On the mound, Maltz handled the pressure like a veteran in his sophomore season, working five innings and allowing only two hits and one run before Donovan Thiery finished the last two innings.

The victory mattered because of what came just before it. Key West had just gone through the sting of district disappointment, then had to turn around quickly for the start of the FHSAA regional round. In Classes 4A through 7A, the association’s regional semifinals and finals are best-of-three series in 2026, and the quarterfinals opened April 24, making every early response count. Key West, which had won its 34th district championship by beating Belen Jesuit, advanced into a semifinals matchup with Somerset Academy of Pembroke Pines, a No. 6-ranked team that had also knocked out Belen on its way through the bracket.

That history gave the Conchs’ rebound extra weight in Monroe County. Ralph Henriquez, in his 17th season at Key West High School, has been credited with more than 538 wins and three state titles, and his program again showed why it has been a postseason fixture on the island. The win also fit into a rare local spring: Keys Weekly noted that 2025 was the first season in which all three Keys baseball teams captured district championships, with Key West joining Marathon and Coral Shores in a record-setting run.

Key West opened the Somerset series at home on May 1 with that momentum intact. After weathering Satellite’s early push, the Conchs had already shown the formula they needed now: quick answers, clean innings, and enough edge to keep the season moving forward.
