Key West Cheer Wins Region 4 Title, Heads to State Finals
Key West cheer wins region 4 title with a 78.1 score and advances to the state championships, a boost for school pride and local youth sports.

Key West’s competition cheer squad clinched the FHSAA Region 4 championship with a score of 78.1, topping a field of 12 teams at South Fork High School on Jan. 9 and securing a direct berth in the state finals. The Conchs’ victory in the small, non-tumbling division means they will take the mat at the RP Funding Center in Lakeland on Jan. 23 without having to go through a semifinal round.
Competitive cheer in Florida offers a dozen divisions, and Key West and Coral Shores both landed in the small non-tumbling grouping, bringing familiar faces from the Keys to the regional meet. Judges score teams on stunt difficulty and execution, pyramids, dance, transitions, use of props and overall crowd appeal. Key West’s routine earned high marks across those categories, putting the program over the top in a crowded regional field.
Head coach Madison Garcia praised the team’s preparation and resolve after the win. “This team has worked so hard all season long,” Garcia said. “They show great determination to hit their routine practice after practice, competition after competition. They come to practice every day ready to put the time in to be successful, and that was evident at our regional competition.”
For Monroe County, the title matters beyond trophies. A regional championship raises the profile of Key West High athletics, energizing families, boosters and local businesses that support youth sports. By winning outright, the Conchs eliminate the uncertainty and extra travel a semifinal could have required, which reduces short-term costs for the program and its supporters. The team’s run can also translate into longer term benefits: higher participation in school programs, increased booster fundraising, and stronger negotiating positions for facility time and district athletic resources.

The state finals in Lakeland present both an athletic challenge and a community opportunity. Road trips by families and supporters generate modest local spending and keep the Keys connected to statewide athletic networks. For student-athletes, a strong showing at state can boost college exposure and scholarship conversations, particularly for programs that are steadily improving.
As Key West heads north, the immediate focus is execution on Jan. 23. A championship would cap a season of steady progress for the Conchs; regardless of the final result, the regional title signals momentum for Key West cheer and a spotlight on Monroe County’s youth athletics as the season moves to the state stage.
