Monroe County approves new jury district map to cut travel time

Monroe County commissioners approved new jury district boundaries that will take effect Jan. 1, a change the county says is meant to reduce the miles residents travel when they are summoned for jury duty. The Monroe County Board of County Commissioners revised the county’s three jury districts to better match summonses with where people live, a practical shift in a county that stretches from Key Largo to Key West.

For many people in the Keys, a jury notice can mean a long run down the Overseas Highway, plus time away from work and added transportation costs. Monroe County’s court system has jury service locations in Key West, Marathon and Plantation Key, and the county says the new lines are intended to shorten travel times for many ZIP codes and cut the number of cases in which a juror is assigned far from home.

The change also fits a legal framework already built around Monroe County’s geography. A local rule, In re: Special Jury Districts for Monroe County, cites Section 40.015(1), Florida Statutes, which allows special jury districts in counties with more than 50,000 residents and more than one court location besides the county seat. In Monroe County, that structure reflects a reality that is hard to ignore: civic duty can involve a drive across a long island chain, not a quick trip across town.

Before the new map, a resident could be summoned to a court location far from home, with a Key Largo juror facing the county’s longest haul to Key West. After the new boundaries take effect, county officials say more summonses should line up with where residents actually live, reducing the need for those cross-county trips. The county has framed the revision as a way to keep jury service fair while making it less burdensome in a place where distance matters.

Residents who receive summonses after Jan. 1 will need to follow the district information that comes with the notice. The Key West Clerk of Courts lists jury duty staff at 305-292-3500 and its office at 500 Whitehead Street in Key West, open from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. The new map does not remove the county’s long geography, but it should make civic duty a little closer to home for many Monroe County residents.
