Cold and wet weather over the past several weeks has pushed construction of the new Murrayville-Woodson Grade School modestly behind schedule, Assistant Superintendent Matthew Moore told the school board Wednesday night, though he said the slip is not cause for alarm at this stage of the project.

The new school, rising at the intersection of Watertower Road and the Woodson Winchester Blacktop, is still on track to finish by June of next year and be ready for student occupancy when the 2027-28 school year begins. Moore said the project remains active despite the weather-driven setback.

One visible consequence of the delay is the postponement of the formal groundbreaking ceremony. Moore told the board that while the district has already moved ahead with physical construction, the groundbreaking event itself will now be strictly ceremonial when it eventually takes place.

On the financial side, Moore offered reassurance that the project's funding structure remains solid. Bond payments for the school are backed by a countywide sales tax dedicated to school construction, and Moore said those sales tax numbers continue to be very healthy, suggesting the modest construction delay poses no threat to the project's financing.

The delayed ceremony is largely a matter of optics rather than progress. With shovels already in the ground, the eventual groundbreaking will mark a milestone the site has technically already passed.
