Routt baseball reaches state semifinals for first time, faces Tremont

Jacksonville Routt is headed to Champaign with a baseball milestone no Rockets team has reached before. After beating Nokomis 8-5 in Monday’s Bloomington super-sectional, Routt earned its first trip to the Class 1A state semifinals and will take on Tremont at 10 a.m. Friday at Illinois Field.

For a program with 32 years of recorded history and a 607-325-1 all-time mark, the run has already changed the way this season will be remembered in Jacksonville and across Morgan County. Routt’s postseason path has included wins over Rushville-Industry, Liberty, Abingdon-Avon and Monmouth United before the Rockets knocked off Nokomis to move one step from the championship game.

The numbers tell the scale of the challenge ahead. Routt enters at 24-12, while Tremont arrives at 37-2 after rolling past Armstrong 9-1 in its super-sectional. The semifinal winner will move into the Class 1A title game as the state finals continue Friday and Saturday at Illinois Field on the University of Illinois campus in Champaign-Urbana.

Routt’s appearance on the statewide stage gives Jacksonville fans a rare chance to follow a local team into the final weekend of the IHSA baseball season. The matchup also puts the Rockets in the same bracket path that began with sectional wins in Bloomington and now leads to Champaign, where the state tournament has gathered the best small-school programs in Illinois.

The program’s breakthrough carries extra weight because it comes after decades of competition without a semifinal appearance. Routt Catholic High School has built a long baseball record, but this team has become the one that finally pushed through to the state’s final four. Friday morning’s game will decide whether the Rockets’ historic season ends with a semifinal banner or continues into Saturday’s championship round.
