Scam Alert Issued as Fraudsters Pose as Pretrial Officials in Morgan County
Illinois pretrial officials are warning Morgan County residents that scammers are impersonating court staff in a new fraud scheme.

The Illinois Office of Statewide Pretrial Services has issued a public scam alert warning that fraudsters are impersonating pretrial and court-related officials, with the warning reaching central Illinois communities including Morgan County.
The alert, reported by local radio and news outlet WLDS on March 13, identifies a scheme in which scammers contact individuals while posing as representatives of pretrial or court-related agencies. The Illinois Office of Statewide Pretrial Services, known as OSPS, oversees supervision of individuals released from custody before trial across the state, making its name a credible-sounding cover for those attempting to deceive residents.
The nature of such impersonation scams typically involves callers creating a sense of urgency, pressuring targets to pay fees, provide personal information, or comply with demands under the false threat of legal consequences. By invoking the authority of a real state agency, fraudsters exploit the unfamiliarity many people have with how pretrial supervision systems actually operate.

OSPS does not collect payments by phone, and legitimate court or pretrial officials do not demand immediate financial transactions or sensitive personal details through unsolicited calls. Anyone in Morgan County who receives a suspicious call from someone claiming to represent a pretrial services office or court authority should hang up and contact verified local authorities directly to confirm whether any such contact was legitimate.
