Deputy Dies During Baker to Vegas Relay Race Through Pahrump

Deputy Levi Vargas, 30, assigned to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's San Dimas Station, suffered a fatal medical emergency March 28 while competing in the Baker to Vegas Challenge Cup Relay on the stretch of state highway running through Pahrump, bringing the law enforcement running community's annual passage through Nye County to a somber close.

Vargas had joined the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department in 2015 as a custody assistant, graduated from Academy Class 413, and most recently served at San Dimas Station. He was running a leg of the 120-mile, 20-segment course when he went into medical distress. Despite receiving medical care on the course, he did not survive.

The relay, now in its 40th year, drew 276 teams and more than 3,000 runners from law enforcement agencies statewide and beyond. It originates north of Baker, California, on Interstate 15 and routes through Pahrump via SR-372 and SR-160 before finishing on the Las Vegas Strip. On the morning of March 28, the Nye County Sheriff's Office posted a public advisory asking drivers to use caution along that SR-372 to SR-160 corridor as runners moved through.

That corridor is precisely where the event's medical logistics face the steepest test. The SR-372 and SR-160 stretches through Pahrump cross open desert terrain, and distances to hospital-level care are substantially longer than on urban legs closer to Las Vegas. When a competitor collapses in a remote section, the interval between that moment and definitive treatment is longer than event organizers and runners may anticipate, a reality Vargas's death brings into focus for Nye County planners and future relay coordinators alike.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department identified Vargas publicly on Sunday, March 29. "He was known among his colleagues and friends for his professionalism, commitment, and compassion to our communities," the department wrote in a statement. "His loss is deeply felt across our Department, and he will be greatly missed." He is survived by his spouse, parents, and siblings. On Monday, an LASD helicopter transported his body from Las Vegas to San Dimas Sheriff's Station, where a procession of first responders escorted him to Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Covina.

The Nye County Sheriff's Office joined other participating agencies in mourning Vargas and urged drivers to observe posted advisories whenever major events use county roads.

Going forward, the death is expected to prompt after-action reviews focused on the relay's rural desert segments: where medical staging posts are positioned along SR-372 and SR-160, how quickly county EMS can reach a downed runner on those roads, what hydration and heat protocols apply to late-March desert conditions, and whether road-closure authority needs to be more formally coordinated with county officials. Pahrump has long functioned as a key support and transition point for the southern relay legs, and that role carries questions of shared responsibility for runner safety that this year's race made impossible to defer.
