Gold Town Casino closes in Pahrump after lease not renewed

Gold Town Casino went dark on Sunday, May 24, leaving a familiar stop along the Pahrump corridor closed after Golden Entertainment chose not to renew the lease. For Pahrump, the shutdown removes a modest but visible piece of the town’s gaming, dining and visitor mix, and it puts a well-known property at the center of a bigger question about what comes next for the site, nearby businesses and the local casino market.

Golden Entertainment said Gold Town employees were reassigned to other company properties, softening the immediate blow to workers even as the building itself stands at a crossroads. Terrible Herbst owns the property, but no public redevelopment plan had been laid out, leaving open the possibility of another gaming use, a retail conversion or a period of vacancy while ownership decides its next move. In a town where highway-facing businesses help shape daily traffic and spending patterns, the future of the site matters well beyond the casino floor.

The closure was already on the calendar by May 23, when a farewell social media post thanked Pahrump for years of patronage. “As we prepare to officially close this Sunday night, we want to sincerely thank Pahrump for all the years of good times you’ve shared with us,” the post said. Gold Town’s last day of operation had passed by the time the shutdown was reported on May 29, turning what had been a familiar routine stop into another vacancy in the local business landscape.

Gold Town opened in 2001 as Terrible’s Town Casino. Golden Entertainment bought the property in 2012 and renamed it Gold Town Casino. The casino has been described as about 12,000 square feet with roughly 148 gaming machines, along with one restaurant and one bar, making it a smaller property than some of the town’s other gaming sites but still part of the cluster that draws local players and travelers.

The closure also fits into a broader moment for Golden Entertainment. In 2023, company executives said proceeds from a gaming transaction could be used to improve Gold Town, Lakeside Casino & RV Park and Pahrump Nugget Hotel and Casino, although the plans were not yet clear. Now, with Golden also working through a move to go private, Gold Town’s shutdown reads as more than a single lease dispute. It is another sign that Pahrump’s casino economy is being reshaped property by property, with some sites advancing and others stalling.
